One of the reasons for early turbocharger failure on BMW is improper lubrication usually due to excessive intervals between oil and filter services, the oil level was good but the condition of the oil not that good.

The vast majority of turbo failures are caused by oil starvation or oil contamination. The N54 turbos are supplied with engine oil and coolant to keep their high temperatures in check (Figure 1). These two fluids are the literal lifeblood for the turbos, and if either one is restricted it can quickly spell disaster.

How to Tell If Your N54 Turbo is Faulty? The most common symptoms of a failing turbocharger include increased fuel consumption, loss of power, excessive smoke coming out of the exhaust (usually blue-colored), and pronounced turbo noises, which sound like high-pitched whistling.

The turbo part number can usually be found stamped or etched into the compressor housing of the turbocharger. Other numbers will be visible on the ID plate. These will be Vehicle manufacturer part numbers and build serial numbers.

These numbers follow a 4-3-4 pattern, with the first and last series of numbers denoting the turbo's model and the middle representing the series number. These numbers are usually etched onto a blue tag, which is usually attached to the compressor housing (the aluminium snail-like top lid of the turbo).
